Big Brother, for example, is sitting on our entertainment nerves for the past three seasons. Some are addicted, others detest it – and while the tiresome controversy is buzzing, the buzz is doing the job. According to TV criteria, the promo for Big Brother’s fourth season is a comma of elegant accuracy: shots of dozens of people in various locations across the country, holding a sign with a date; partly reminiscing, partly dramatic background piano music; only 10 seconds to the end, the familiar opening melody is revealed. With no title nor an explicit logo, no “coming soon!” nor “what the entire country has been waiting for!!” – just date and background music, c’est tous.
It is not the first time that Big Brother promos crack the code; last season, which was weaker than previous ones, the promos created a virtual reality of life and death: If you don’t watch – you wouldn’t know. In an age when the cover is of more value than the content, and echo is louder than sound – the right promo is nothing trivial. In this one, a 43 seconds long promo, all is included: fellows who’ve been evicted from the house as princes of the gutter for no reason whatsoever; masses who devoutly watch fellow anonymous people while, let’s say, they are smoking a cigarette; critics who call out “mother of all evil”; live streamed scandals…
”Remember all this clutter?” hisses the promo, “Here it goes again”. One thing is for sure: a good promo is better than precious content.
